What Are Marshmallows Made From?

Marshmallows are made from very simple products. These products are being used by us in our day to day life. It’s just the way of making marshmallows that make them marshmallows. The Egyptians were the first who started making marshmallows. These marshmallows were made from tree sap called the mallow tree. The marshmallow plant has a history of use in herbal medicine. The Egyptians were the first to know about the medicinal properties of this beautiful herb. It had been used to treat wounds, reduce inflammation, cure toothaches and soothe sore throats. It has also been relied on as a food source during times of famine, even though the plant itself did not taste like candy. Cooking: A pan is used to heat the mixture of sugar, water and corn syrup. The temperature of this solution has to be maximum 240°F(115°C) that is the soft ball stage on the candy thermometer. And on the other hand, take around 60 grams of gelatin in the beater and break it. If you want to make some specific flavour marshmallows then the boiling time is the best time to add flavours. E.g. if you want to make coffee flavoured marshmallows then instead of water a concentrate of dark coffee has to added. And the temperature for boiling changes according to the ingredients added.

Forming: The hot boiling mixture is then added by gelatin. Air is pumped into the mixture. The mixture cools in a tempering kettle, passes through another filter, and Marshmallow continues on to the “hill.” Marshmallows are extruded through a machine or deposited onto bands.

Cooling: After the marshmallows have been extruded they are in a shape of pillows. These pillows are then sent through a cooling drum, which extracts the excess starch. In this whole process the temperature of the marshmallows comes down significantly making them suitable for packaging.

Packaging: The marshmallow pillows are cut into small cubicle pieces. Around 6-7 marshmallows are packaged.
